CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
Field trips outside the classroom are an integral part of learning at Saint Lucy School . The educational experiences that are conducted during school hours are planned by teachers to correlate with the regular classroom instructional program . Teachers often balance in-house field trips , such as the Walk Through History experiences , with off campus field trips as they arrange activities that will enhance their curriculum and engage student learning .
Trips to the pumpkin patch for the younger grades are indeed fun-filled beloved traditions , but in the classroom they translate to math and language as
well as social studies activities . Off campus field trips to Hidden Villa , History Park , local plays , California missions , the Quicksilver Mine and the Ainsley House are just a few trips that the K – 5 teachers experience with their students
enhancing not only science and social studies but language arts as well . Junior High students also love to learn and explore via field trips . Whether studying physics at Great America , learning about different environments presented
via New Generation Science Standards at Science Camp , or touring the state capital , they are enthusiastic learners .
Eighth grade students at Saint Lucy School recently benefited from an engaging trip to the state capital . They met with Assemblyman Evan Low who talked about equal rights for citizens as well as how young people can make a difference in their community . In addition they were able to witness , in depth , workings of government as a compliment to their study of United States History . They were able to discover many amazing facts about our state as they toured and explored the California Museum .
Saint Catherine School Robotics Teams Qualify for National and World Competitions
It has been a very good year for Saint Catherine School Robotics teams . The Short Circuits , a middle school team , and the Vexers , one of our elementary teams , qualified for a national level CREATE US Open in Council Bluffs , Iowa in March . The Vexers are also going to the VEX Robotics World Championship in Louisville , Kentucky , in April . Each team designed and built a robot , wrote code for robot commands , kept a journal of all their work , and planned a STEM project which they present at competitions .
Saint Catherine fielded five middle school teams and two elementary teams this year using the VEX IQ system . In only the second year of competition , the teams have excelled throughout the season . The students learned a great deal about engineering robots , writing code , designing a projects and competition protocol .
Next year , Saint Catherine School will again field elementary and middle school robotics teams . Plans are in the works to expand to the VEX EDR system for higher level teams . This will better prepare the students for high school robotics .
Fair Trade Bake Sale at Saint Christopher School
Sixth graders at Saint Christopher School recently completed a language arts unit in which they read , researched , and wrote about the production of chocolate . The cornerstone of this unit was a novel , “ The Bitter Side of Sweet ” by Tara Sullivan . As the students quickly learned , chocolate has a dark backstory . Thousands of children in west Africa , who are forced to work on cacao plantations that are not fair trade certified , are the victims of child labor and brutal abuse .
In order to raise community awareness about this injustice , the sixth graders visited other classrooms to share their research projects with fellow students . Additionally , the sixth graders hosted a bake sale with goodies featuring fair trade chocolate . The proceeds were donated to Catholic Relief Services .

Second Grade at Saint Leo the Great School Participate in STEM Challenge
The second grade class at Saint Leo the Great School , led by their teacher Ann Colucci , had their most recent STEM ( science , technology , engineering , and mathematics ) challenge based on the book , “ Jack and the Beanstalk .”
“ Oh no ! Jack has done it again . He can ’ t resist magic beans , and he is once again being pursued by the giant . The giant , having learned from past mistakes , has lined the beanstalk with barbed wire . Jack needs another plan of escape .”
For the design challenge , the students built a parachute for Jack , to help escape the giant . They used a variety of building materials . Students had to make the best use of the materials at hand .
Saint Leo the Great second graders designing their parachutes .
Once the parachutes were created , the students went outside to do their experiments to find out whether or not they were successful in having Jack escape the giant . It was great fun !
