The Archbishop of Ho Chi Minh City Dies in Rome During his Ad Limina Visit
Vatican City ( AsiaNews ) - The archbishop of Ho Chi Minh City , Archbishop Paul Bùi Văn Đọc died yesterday in Rome during the ad limina visit , just a day after his meeting with Pope Francis along with other Vietnamese prelates .
Archbishop Paul Bùi Văn Đọc suffered a sudden stroke on March 6 at 11 a . m . during the Mass that the 32 Vietnamese bishops were celebrating in the Basilica of Saint Paul outside the walls , over which he was presiding . Despite the efforts of the doctors and nurses , he died later at San Camillo hospital . His body is still at the hospital and the Vietnamese community still does not know what to do .
The prelates of the Episcopal Conference of Vietnam have been in Italy since March 2 , after having made a brief visit to the Society for the foreign missions of Paris ( the MEPs ). During the period of the visit , the bishops had planned several meetings with the Vatican dicasteries .
Archbishop Paul Bùi Văn Đọc was president of the Episcopal Conference during the period 2013-2016 . He was born on 11 November 1944 in Da Lat , in the mountainous province of the central highlands . In 1956 he began his studies in the seminary in Saigon . Between 1960 and 1970 he then continued his studies in philosophy and theology at the Urbaniana University in Rome and was ordained a priest on
Monsignor Paul Bùi Văn Đọc was struck by a stroke on March 6 during a concelebration in the Basilica of Saint Paul outside the walls . He had met Pope Francis the day before . Originally from Da Lat , he was consecrated bishop of My Tho by John Paul II . Pope Francis had appointed him coadjutor archbishop of Ho Chi Minh in 2013 .
December 17 , 1970 , in Da Lat . In 1975 he was appointed rector of the major seminary of Minh Hòa , in the diocese , where he remained until his appointment as vicar general in 1995 . For this long period he also worked as a professor of theology in the seminaries of Saigon , Hà Nội and Huế ( 1986-2008 ).
Pope John Paul II appointed him bishop of My Tho on March 26 , 1999 . His episcopal consecration took place on March 20 of the following year , through the hands of Archbishop Jean- Baptiste Phạm Minh Mẫn of Ho Chi Minh City .
On September 28 , 2013 , Pope Francis appointed him coadjutor Archbishop of Ho Chi Minh City and on 22 March 2014 , succeeded Cardinal . Phạm Minh Mẫn , as the third pastor of the archdiocese , which was erected in 1960 .
U . S . Aircraft Carrier Ends Visit to Đà Nẵng
Đà Nẵng ( AsiaNews ) – The USS Carl Vinson , the first U . S . warship to dock in a Vietnamese port since 1975 , ended its three-day visit to Vietnam March 14 .
The presence of the aircraft carrier off Đà Nẵng marked a new beginning in U . S . -Vietnamese relations , and reaffirmed the U . S . role and interests in the Asia-Pacific region .
“ Today is a historic day ,” said Admiral John Fuller , commander of the U . S . Navy combat aircraft group , at the welcoming ceremony in Đà Nẵng .
“ We are very honoured to receive this warm welcome . We also would like to thank Vietnam for its excellent logistical support . This makes this visit a reality . The United States and Vietnam are working more closely than ever .”
The Vietnamese side was also pleased . The visit , said Vietnamese Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang , will “ continue to promote bilateral relations within the framework of the two countries ’ comprehensive partnership and contribute to maintaining peace , stability , security , cooperation and development in the region .”
During their stay in Đà Nẵng , U . S . officers and sailors took part in many activities in the port city , such as outdoor musical performances , sporting events , visits and exchanges with five social support centers for children and the disabled , including the Victim Protection Center , which treats victims of Agent Orange , a defoliant used by the United States from 1961 and 1971 over much of southern Vietnam during the Vietnam War .
The U . S . Navy delegation also discussed with its Vietnamese counterpart power and water technologies , helping local authorities and Vietnamese students to cope with natural disasters , as well as fire prevention and health care training .
Most Vietnamese welcomed the visit of the U . S . warship to Đà Nẵng , especially local residents .
“ We live near the sea ,” Mr Nvh told AsiaNews , “ but in the recent past , we have not had the courage to go out fishing . Many of our fishing boats have been sabotaged by Tầu Lạ ( unknown boats , presumed to be Chinese ). Our fishermen have been killed by ‘ para-military ships ’. Now the ‘ right people ’ are backing us , people who come to protect us . In the meantime , our government does not care about us .”
Ms . Nguyen Ngoc H . is more skeptical . “ Vietnam has welcomed many heads of state , such as U . S . President Obama ,” she said . “ A few months ago , his successor Donald Trump visited the country , but the future of Vietnam cannot be based on an American aircraft carrier alone . It depends on the Vietnamese .”
For some geopolitical experts , the visit by the USS Carl Vinson is not an isolated
event but will see Vietnamese ports open to other U . S . ships . This will have important implications for US military strategy in the region .
The U . S . Navy gives Washington the means to maintain a long-term presence in the world ’ s seas , and the arrival of a U . S . air carrier in Vietnam is particularly important in view of China ’ s increasingly aggressive moves in the South China Sea .
“ The U . S . -Vietnam relationship does not stop at the visit of the air carrier USS Carl Vinson , but the latter is of great significance in view of the regional context ,” said Professor Nmh , an American- Vietnamese political scientist .
For Retired Rear Admiral John Kirby , the visit is “ a message to Vietnam , about how much we care about that relationship ; it ’ s a message to China , about what they ’ re doing in the region ; but it ’ s also a broader message to everyone in the Pacific region , that the United States is here and we ’ re here to stay .”
