tvc.dsj.org | February 5, 2019 IN THE DIOCESE 3 ADA In Action – Introducing the Annual Diocesan Appeal for 2019 By Sue Pershon The Diocese of San Jose is prepar- ing to kick off the Annual Diocesan Appeal (ADA) 2019 the weekend of February 9 - 10 with the release of a new video and a brochure, which highlight this year’s theme “Hand in Hand in Ministry.” Bishop Patrick J. McGrath and Coadjutor Bishop Oscar Cantú write that, “When we come together – Hand in Hand in Ministry – we realize that we have been blessed with many gifts, and we find strength and beauty in our diversity.” This year’s goal is $6.5 million, with a projected parish rebate of $3 million. For the first time in the history of our ADA, Elementary School Tuition Assistance has been added to the list of ministries supported by the ADA. Other ministries include the Hispanic Apostolate, Office for Youth & Young Adults, Social Justice, Faith Formation and Catechist Development, Seminar- ian Education and the Institute for Leadership in Ministry. Once a parish meets its established goal all additional funds are rebated back to the parish. Last year the Dio- cese was able to rebate more than $3 million to parishes for their unique needs. Here are some examples of how the 2018 Rebates assisted parishes: funded Parish Mission trips, church air conditioning installations and repairs, worship space renovations, stained glass repairs, youth ministry programs, faith formation programs, establishing a building fund for future needs, hall kitchen remodels, youth re- treats, restroom remodels, adult faith formation, facilities upgrades, parking lot maintenance, landscaping up- grades, roof repairs and replacement and parish debt reduction. In addition to the type of projects listed for 2018, ADA 2019 rebates hope to be used for funding the Village House Homeless Shelter, school building maintenance, parish youth scholarships for the Con- firmation Retreat and Diocesan Youth Retreat, surveillance security systems, new parish hospitality facilities and staffing for parish ministries. Our ADA video introduces our Coadjutor Bishop, Oscar Cantú, to our parishioners. In the video Bishop Cantú talks about this time of transi- tion “not only for me, but also for the Diocese; also for Bishop McGrath, who has been the Bishop for some 19 years. So I am excited to be here. I think week-by-week, it has felt more like home. I will continue to preach and to try to live the Gospel to the best of my ability and to continue to serve the people of this Diocese. We will do it Hand in Hand.” Joe Naylor, Chief Development Of- ficer for the Diocese of San Jose, shared that the Stewardship & Development team looks forward to working with the Parish Teams to share the message of the ADA with their parishioners. Cassin, Innovative Catholic Education Philanthropist, Receives FADICA’s 2019 Saint Katharine Drexel Award Foundations and Donors Interested in Activities (FADICA), the leading network of Catholic philanthropists in the U.S., has chosen B.J. Cassin, of Los Altos, as the 2019 recipient of its Saint Katharine Drexel Award for exemplary contributions to Catholic philanthropy. Cassin’s philanthropy has been instrumental in making Catholic edu- cation across the U.S. more accessible, especially through the innovative Cristo Rey Network model. The an- nouncement comes as Catholic schools throughout the nation celebrate Na- tional Catholic Schools Week, January 27 through February 2. The Saint Katharine Drexel Award is named after foundress of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and patron saint of philanthropy. Saint Katha- rine inherited her wealth, which she spent her lifetime giving away, par- ticularly to build schools and support access to quality education for African Americans and Native Americans.  B.J. Cassin founded and chaired the Cassin Educational Initiative Founda- tion (CEIF), launched in 2000 to estab- lish private, college preparatory middle and high schools in economically- challenged communities throughout the U.S. CEIF provided start-up funds for 18 Cristo Rey High Schools and 37 Nativity Miguel Middle Schools. Most recently, B.J. co-founded The Drexel Fund (named after Saint Katha- rine Drexel), a national fund providing start-up capital and advisory support for new, high-quality, financially sus- tainable faith-based and private schools like Cristo Rey Network schools. The Cristo Rey model is an innova- tive and proven Catholic middle and high school model for low-income students. The model provides rigorous academics and a corporate work study program that equips students with corporate employment skills and the means to fund their education. Cristo Rey graduates are three times more likely to complete a bachelor’s degree Ladies of Charity Annual Day of Recollection The Ladies of Charity will hold their Annual Day of Recollection on March 11 in Becket Hall at Saint Thomas of Canterbury Church in San Jose. B.J. and Bebe Cassin by age 24 than their peers in the same socio-economic situation. “B.J. carries Saint Katharine Drexel’s philanthropic spirit and legacy forward in our time,” says Alexia Kelley, Presi- dent and CEO of FADICA. “B.J. invited multiple partners, including corporate employers, to participate in Cristo Rey’s innovative model – all to help students reach their potential. He invested in the network early and brought the model to scale across the country, spreading its effectiveness and impact.” Cassin’s investment in the Cristo Rey Network that helped establish 35 schools was a pivotal milestone for the Cristo Rey Network, says Father John Foley, S.J., Chair Emeritus and Chief Mission Officer of the Cristo Rey Net- work in Chicago, Ill. “The investments of the Cassin Educational Initiative Foun- dation altered the history and projection of the Cristo Rey Network,” he says. “B.J. along with his wife Bebe have always been in favor of ‘leveling the playing field’ in education. They have a passion for providing educational opportunities to young people who often get denied the chance to use and maximize their gifts in the world. B.J. does not hesitate when there is an op- portunity to provide young people a chance.” Cassin is the second honoree of the Saint Katharine Drexel Award, estab- lished in 2017 when it was awarded to Sister Sally Duffy, SC. Cassin will receive the award at FADICA’s annual meeting February 8 in Santa Monica.
