The challenge for Citadel Se-
curities is to attract a new breed
of traders in order to carry on
competing with the top investment
banks. Earlier this year, it kicked
off a series of ‘datathons’; across
the US, UK and Ireland, in search
for the top quant and technology
talent from Universities. At each
event, participants would form
teams to work through a large
and complex dataset and then
present their findings to a panel
of judges. Teams would compete
for a cash prize pool of $25,000, as
well as winning the opportunity to
interview for careers at Citadel and
Citadel Securities.

which has certainly helped White
in her career. The importance
of computer programming and
technology architecture will only
increase as trading becomes more
quantitative.
“Being able to bridge the gap
between technology and trading
is invaluable. It is difficult to get
involved in electronic trading with-
out this knowledge,” she says.
However, White says her success
has not only been down to her
technological expertise, but also
down to being open to challenges,
taking on criticism, and nurturing
relationships.
When offering advice to those
looking to start a career in financial
services, White references a lesson
she learned from the book ‘Never
Eat Alone’ by Keith Ferrazzi. “He
suggests you should constantly
nurture your professional rela-
tionships instead of only reaching
out when you need them. In that
spirit I’d recommend focusing on
building a network and, simultane-
ously, codifying how you’ll stay in
contact.”
