COJCL State Convention 2017

The national Second Vice President (in charge of hospitality and spirit) announces the spirit winners at each day’s assembly. It’s never Colorado, nope, it won’t be us again…until this time - it was! What?? Hooray!! Hours of fun preparation and practice, collecting all the costumes, checking they all made it in the luggage and onto the delegates without getting ripped, so much energy practicing and then really hard-core earnestly cheering, so many assemblies with no recognition, and now two of our delegates approach the stage for the day’s small state prize – and what is it? A little tiny, plain yellow duck!

This tiny little golden yellow toy was immediately cherished and hailed as “Vilbur” – “Wilbur with a V”!

At one point, he had a toga. One year, a Colorado student ran for national office, wore all yellow every day of nationals, handed out stickers with Vilbur the Duck and her name. The Colorado Bazaar table started selling little yellow rubber ducks, and yellow duck umbrellas; both items were perfect for that rainy convention week in Richmond, VA. Over time, Wilbur grew into our huge spirit duck. Spirit trophy ducklings appeared not long afterwards.
