Working at summer camp is the perfect job: all day by the lake, a great tan, living in the moment. There
is just one problem. Living in the moment has a negative connotation for Christians. We are told to focus on the
eternal and to not live for temporary pleasures. “Live it up” or “instant gratification” are lifestyle terms that Christians learn to avoid. We should not give in to the world’s call of “just do it” but rather follow the harder call to have
patience and learn to deny oneself. At least, that’s what traditional religion requires and some Christians devote
their lives to these rules. However, the flipside of this teaching is often left out. Living in the moment could be the
best thing a Christian ever does.
My summer started out rough, with long days and hard work. Tejas wasn’t
