n 1980, Westbury Baptist Church of Houston created a committee to explore the possibility of purchasing property for
a Christian retreat center shortly after the Powell family developed an interest in selling Camp Tejas. The church created
the Westbury Foundation as a nonpro?t organization that will
own and operate the retreat center when the property is found.
The Westbury Baptist Church youth had conducted weekend
retreats at Camp Tejas in previous years and in 1980 were

scheduled to use Tejas for summer camp. The church pastor and the camp search committee discovered that Camp
Tejas was for sale during their summer camp. After a prayer
meeting the search committee knew that Camp Tejas was
the answer to their prayers. Bill Powell reduced the cost of
the property as a donation to the Westbury Foundation and
Westbury church members would donate money to help the
foundation to purchase Camp Tejas.
