JUNE 3 - 7 COMMUNITY BIBLE CHURCH SENIOR HIGH San Antonio, TX - www.communitybible.com THEME: MOTION SELFLESS LOVE By Caroline Cunningham, Summer Ministry Team D uring my ?rst week of training at Camp Tejas, I realized that this little miss priss was going to get dirty. And to be completely honest, I was not looking forward to it. From sweating to scraped knees, I was quickly experiencing foreign concepts that I never hoped to encounter. I could not wear normal clothes; I was stuck in t-shirts and work out shorts with my hair pulled back. I felt like I was turning into a boy. I had served people before, but not to this degree and I did not fully understand what it meant to get dirty and put myself aside. I was fully con?dent that this was where God wanted me to be, however, I had no idea why. I continued to question why God placed me in an atmosphere that was so far away from my comfort zone. With the camp theme being “serve as Christ served” ( Mark 10:45), I started to realize that not all aspects of this job were going to be enjoyable. I wondered why God sent His Beloved Son to serve such vile creatures and then make it a point for us to serve others. Then I realized the reason why serving is so crucial. Human beings thrive on pride and serving goes against everything in our ?esh. It tears down every shred of pride in our inner beings. Scripture states, “... He humbled Himself becoming obedient to the point of death...” (Philippians 2:8). Christ set the example to serve because serving brings humility and humility produces sel?essness. When we come to a state of sel?essness, where we are only serving to glorify God, it is only then when we really experience God’s pure and perfect love. “If God’s love is not the motive behind ones actions, then those deeds are dead” (1 Corinthians 13:3). In life, there are many types of love: the love you have for your friends, the love you have for your family, and the love you have for your “signi?cant other.” I do not believe that love can be de?ned; only ob- served. Serving is a beautiful act that shows sel?ess love. Society has made love to be something shallow, but in truth it is more profound than any of us can fathom. Most of the time when we love someone it is a sel?sh thing; we love only to receive something in return. The purest form of love, is sel?ess love because it asks for nothing in return, not even to be acknowledged.
