YOUR PLACE WITH GOD By Kristen Eskew - Summer Ministry Team O ne of the ?rst things I noticed about Camp Tejas and the thing that I love the most is that everyone has their own spot, a place where they can just go and sit when they’re tired, or when they do their personal devotion time, or when they just want to be alone for awhile. For some this is the woodshop or the swings. For others it is one of the many docks or the prayer chapel. For me it is this wonderful little deck by the motels. It overlooks both lakes, providing a fantastic view and has this nifty tree that grows through the middle of it. The tree is my favorite part. Not only is it a great back rest when I am weary, but its branches, which reach across the water, provide the perfect amount of seclusion, just enough to make me con?dent that it is my space and that no one will bother me, but not so much that I am completely isolated and become lonely. It is here, my spot, that I come when I want to marvel at God and just know how truly magni?cent He is. Psalm 111:3 says, “Glorious and majestic are His deeds, and His righteousness endures forever.” That is what I’ve learned this summer, just how great the greatness of God is and how much He desires to share that greatness with me. Just stop and think about it for a second. Pick up a leaf and examine it, or, for that matter, go ponder in the midst of the whole tree (like mine). Look at the veins in the leaf and the bark on the trunk of the tree. Notice how perfectly the tree is placed so that it gets just enough water and sunlight without completely drowning or drying out. Now, look up or walk around the tree. Think of how many years it took for that tree to grow to be so humongous (assuming your tree is large of course). It must have taken a lot of patience for God to spend so many years just to form a single tree. The point is that no human could have even conjured up an idea for something equivalent; it can only be God’s workmanship. And, God doesn’t stop at trees and leaves, but He makes countless majestic things each day. There are sunsets and raindrops and June bugs. And, if God put all that effort and time and wisdom into a tree that will probably be turned into paper in a few years anyway, think of what He does for us who can love Him and worship Him. Now that is mind-boggling. Wonderful, but mind-boggling. The late ‘90’s became one of those points in time for Camp Tejas. The launch of the Tejas Summer Ministry Team program and a pledge of $100,000 for the construction of a 300 seat capacity auditorium created new and exciting ministry opportunities for Camp Tejas. These two events lead to dramatic changes in the ministry that are still being felt today. 881264 Camp Tejas Mag.indd 12 • • • • • • Summer Ministry Team program is launched $100,000 pledge is made for the construction of Marmax Auditorium A new maintenance and storage building is constructed Camp serves 37,000 guests from ’95-‘99 Newly created Summer Ministry Team program grows to 18 students Camp Tejas begins to experience declines in guest numbers in 1999 with many church groups outgrowing the camp’s conference facilities 12/8/2006 2:38:40 PM
