GENDER SYNTHESIS

Pat Macdonald

My thoughts on gender are mixed because of the differences there are in males and females. In my opinion I would say without being stereotypical that males are more of a dominant gender. For the most part when it comes to strength males are typically stronger than women due to the fact of the genetic build. They are naturally built bigger and tend to grow different than women do. However, I don’t believe that they shouldn’t be treated equally. When it comes down to it, gender doesn’t matter when thinking of equality.

After reflecting on the assignment I’m going to explain why I feel this way. In the article “Why Girls Are Outperforming Boys in School” by Mary Ellen Flannery, she describes her thoughts of the stereotypes that women face over men. She describes some statistics on how women differentiate from males in the classroom. We see that, “In 2010, the college completion rate for men was just 27 percent- not much better it was 40 years ago. But for women, 36 percent, up from 14 percent in 1970” (Flannery). This proves that when it comes down to it women statistically are more of an intelligent gender than men. These statistics prove that women have made a much better improvement in the last half century than what men have done in the classroom. I personally think that men tend to be more of an active gender than women do over a course of a day. This doesn’t really get the brain racing and coming up with different things because males are usually occupied. However women on the other hand have the opposite gene and I feel that women aren’t as active, which really gives them the opportunity to grow and develop. Another quote that gave me a different outlook on gender equality was, “Girls and boys have very similar rates of intelligence, but girls do work harder- and their hard work pays off” (Ellen Flannery). I think that this can be agreed that girls’ brains may work harder than what boys’ brains do. Due to this I feel that overall it could statistically show that girls are more intellectual than males are due to the growth of the brain. One last quote that caught my eye was, “Schools should set high expectations, and treat students as individuals” (Ellen Flannery). I agree with this quote because it shouldn’t matter what gender you are when it comes to school. Everyone should be treated equally when it comes to education because it would be extremely stereotypical just to judge someone based on their gender. It would be very unethical to not give a child the full opportunity to achieve the highest education possible just because of what gender they are.

The next article I read was, “GE to Employ 20,000 Women in Bid to end “Male Dominance” of STEM fields” by Andrew Eicher. One quote that immediately stuck out to me was, “The goal is to obtain a “50:50”
