Modern Muscle Cars vs. Classic Muscle Cars

By Kyle Krug

Born in the early 1960's, the muscle car era was a new generation of cars the world had never laid eyes on. Their main difference was they were two-door coupe and fastback cars that came packed with monstrous engines. This wave of cars culture came to an end in the early 70's as the gas crisis evolved. Fast forward to the early 2000's and Chevy, Ford, and Dodge decided to bring the muscle car back, each bringing to production one remake of their most popular cars from back in the day. This is when the great debate of classic vs. modern muscle cars started to stir up. Each side has its reasoning. The debate, in my opinion, will never come to a conclusion.

I'm going to start off with where I stand on this debate. I personally own a 1968 Mustang coupe so I'm sure you can tell I'm on the classic-is-better-than-modern-muscle side. When I see a classic on the road or even rotting into someone's backyard, I see a piece of history. Most muscle cars are coming up on being 50 years old. As they get older they get harder to find. So, there is a lot more respect for classic muscle cars these days. When I see a modern muscle car in public it might grab my attention. Yet when a classic rolls down the street I might take a double look at it trying to see what it is. The value of these cars also only goes up in price. As these cars become older and more desirable the prices only go up. Many people buy them as investments. Instead of buying stocks they buy classic muscle cars. Not only can you make money off them, but you can also enjoy driving them too. Once you buy a new car these days they say once you drive it off the dealership lot the car loses 20% of its value. That means with modern muscle cars you are almost guaranteed going to lose money once you sell the car.(Seams, Clayton. “How Do Modern Muscle Cars Stack up against the Originals?” Driving, 10 Apr. 2014, driving.ca/chevrolet/camaro/auto-news/entertainment/how-do-modern-muscle-cars-stack-up-against-the-originals.)
