6) What is the plan for 2017? We will likely send almost 70 Girls back to school in 2017. We also hope to support between 10 and 20 mums to establish income generating projects and will ask our supporters as well as corporate sponsors to help us achieve this.

7)

To what extent do you have to be creative or innovative in your work? Can you give examples? e.g. fundraising etc

Creativity and innovation in fundraising come when we think of the community of supporters we have created. We are led by what resonates with people and respond to this. Some groups organise fun runs or have morning teas and individuals forgo birthday gifts and ask for donations for our Girls instead. Our support schools have stalls at fairs and even fundraising treks! A group from the German International School organised a 4 day trek across Fiji this year which was amazing, they raised enough money to rebuild our Coordinator’s home that was destroyed in cyclone Winston in February.

Our favourite fundraiser is our Christmas appeal. We found a beautiful Nigella Lawson chocolate fruitcake recipe when we first started and it has become our signature cake, wrapped in hessian and Fijian tapa paper with a frangipani, it makes a beautiful gift, and the profits bring in enough funds to send the Girls back to school each January.

"We don’t come with a set of assumptions or with our capes and trumpets hoping to save the day. Local people always know the solutions to their own problems"

BH: What keeps you motivated and committed?

JK: The stories of change. The women and girls who show us their resilience against breathtaking odds. The joy and gratitude that comes from the families. The grit and commitment and determination of Urmila and her super supportive family who have been through so much this year. None of this would be possible without them.

BH: How can people support a Girl and her world?

JK: Get to know us and see what resonates! Some people are generous monthly givers, others support us at Christmas time, others offer skills, talent and time, others like Rotary invite us to speak and sell raffle tickets for us. School students do presentations on educating girls and then hold cake stalls. We always ask people how they would most enjoy getting involved as that’s what always brings the best out of them and serves both our Fiji community and our supporters.
