My interpretation is that Jacob, provoked by the overpowering
purity of the angel, struggles with matter, not to dominate it,
but to recognize its divine nature, and in it his own. He
himself, purified by the struggle, worn out but resolute,
harmonizes with the angel, and the angel blesses him,
touching the transformed matter with his feet.
