with Legal Services of North Dakota, for example), we’ll need to invest more resources in experiential learning. Toward that end, we’re working to make an externship opportunity available for every law student. We’re working with the bench and bar to identify the areas in which our students can offer the most assistance while gaining a valuable educational experience. We’re experimenting with “distance” externships, allowing students in Grand Forks to provide assistance to government attorneys and judges in western and rural North Dakota without the need to find affordable housing or relocate their families. And we’re working to improve the quality of the field placement experience for our students as well as for the courts and agencies they serve. We’re reallocating resources to create a new position at the School of Law, the Field Placement & Rural Justice Coordinator. The ABA sets forth numerous requirements for valid field placements, including regularly scheduled tutorials, training of field supervisors, faculty and supervisor evaluation of student performance according to set methods, and periodic review of the activities offered through the field placement. The new Field Placement & Rural Justice Coordinator will be responsible for ensuring a sound educational experience for our students as well as ensuring that our students deliver useful legal assistance. Experiential learning has been a primary goal of our curriculum; now it will be a requirement. A resource for your clients. Assurance for you.
