UND LAW LIBRARY
OFFERS SERVICES TO THE
LEGAL COMMUNITY
Did you know you don’t have to be a law student to access the
wealth of legal information at University of North Dakota Law
Library?
As a public institution, the library is available for anyone to use,
especially the legal community of North Dakota, which is kept in
mind as the collection and services are developed. We understand
that given the expanse of this state, it is not convenient or even
possible for many legal professionals to physically access the
library, but the library strives to provide as much remote research
assistance as possible. My position specializes in providing such
support to members of the bench and bar and look forward to
assisting you with your research in person or via phone/e-mail.
The experienced, full-time staff of nine includes two reference
librarians with juris doctor degrees, and we are currently
recruiting a third. We are able to provide a variety of research
support for print and digital resources, including assistance
forming research plans, locating materials, database information
and research instruction.
The library recently acquired alumni access to Hein Online’s Law
Journal Library. Any graduate of the UND School of Law can
acquire a password by contacting me. They can then access more
than 2,000 law and law-related periodicals covering all 50 states
and many foreign countries.
Those who are able to come to the library can check out any
circulating materials with a UND alumni card. Contact Access
Services at Chester Fritz Library, 701-777-2189 to get one, and
recent graduates may still be able to use their student ID by
contacting Jane Oakland, circulation manager, at 701-777-3482.
The physical materials include federal and state primary law
focusing heavily on North Dakota and Minnesota, and a variety

of secondary sources, including treatises and practice guides.
Westlaw Patron Access, is also available, which provides access
to certain documents on WestlawNext at one dedicated terminal,
such as federal and state primary law, KeyCite, and a variety of
secondary sources.
Also available onsite are Hein Online libraries, in addition to
the previously mentioned law journals, and State Statutes: A
Historical Archive, American Indian Law Collection, a 50-state
Session Law Library, a variety of foreign and international
materials including Canadian statutes/Supreme Court cases, and
more.
Other onsite databases include Bloomberg BNA, which provides
information related to specialized areas such as health and tax
law; Legaltrac, a periodicals index; Proquest Congressional,
a federal legislative history, and more. A full electronic
subscriptions list can be found at libguides.law.und.edu/content.
