YOUNG LAWYER’S SHOWCASE ADAM LANDSTROM is an energy landman and owner of Big Sioux Energy LLC in Bismarck. He is admitted to practice law in North Dakota and is an AAPL Registered Landman (RL). As a landman, Adam has spent extensive time traveling throughout the Bakken in North Dakota and Montana doing a variety of land and energy services. His current business operation is focused on providing services to mineral owners, law firms, and energy exploration companies. Adam grew up on a farmstead near Finley, North Dakota. He attended the University of Mary in Bismarck where he graduated Suma Cum Laude with a degree in Business Administration. After graduation, he began working on his MBA before suspending his studies to attend law school. Adam graduated with distinction from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 2011. In law school Adam was active in Moot Court and the ABA. During his third year of law school, Adam was elected to the ABA Law Student Division Board of Governors. During his time as a Governor, Adam was able to travel to many different ABA meetings and events representing his circuit’s views and concerns on legal education and related issues. In recognition of his work as an ABA Governor, Adam was awarded the UND Lillian Elsinga Outstanding Student Leader award and the ABA Star of the Division award. After passing the North Dakota Bar, Adam finished his MBA degree studies at the University of Mary. Currently, Adam is a member of the SBAND Young Lawyer’s Section’s Mentorship Committee; ABA Section on Environment, Energy, and Resources; Landman Association of North Dakota; and the American Association of Professional Landman (AAPL). In his free time, Adam enjoys attending Fighting Sioux Hockey games, traveling, exercising, and spending time with his family. JAMES HOY grew up in the countryside near Harwood, North Dakota. After graduating from West Fargo High School, Jim attended the University of North Dakota and graduated with both an undergraduate degree in business management and a Master’s degree in Business Administration. While completing these degrees, Jim competed on the UND men’s basketball team and served as a team captain. After his basketball eligibility expired, Jim attended law school at UND. Before earning his law degree in 2011 with distinction, Jim served as the Editor-in-Chief of the North Dakota Law Review and as the president of the Student Trial Lawyers Association. He also competed on the moot court team. In recognition of his oral advocacy and leadership skills, Jim was elected to the Order of Barristers and was recognized as an Outstanding Student Leader. After law school, Jim served as a Law Clerk to the Honorable Dale V. Sandstrom of the North Dakota Supreme Court. He currently works for the Maring Williams Law Office in Bismarck. Jim is licensed to practice law in North Dakota and Minnesota, and he focuses his practice on plaintiff ’s personal injury and wrongful death law. Jim enjoys outdoor activities, reading, and spending time with family and friends. He volunteers his time with the Special Olympics of North Dakota and serves on the Board of Directors of the West Fargo Educational Foundation. Jim also serves as a co-chair to the Young Lawyers Section’s Education and Professionalism Committee. Jim and his wife live in Bismarck. 16 The Gavel February 2013
