Spring Flower

Elizabeth Kaspar, Grade 11

There is a famous saying: “April showers bring May Flowers." Spring is a wonderful time of the year, bringing new life into a world that was once filled with the death and despair of a harsh winter. The trees begin to grow new leaves, the flowers start to bloom. The animals start to come out of hiding. The snow slowly melts, leaving puddles of mud to play and jump in. And all across the neighborhood, you can hear little kids screaming and running up and down the street, jumping in every puddle, riding their bikes and wearing their new spring dresses and shorts. Yard sales are soon to begin, along with the hunt for candy-filled eggs. The spring is a time for new life and new beginnings. As I ride my bike down the road, I notice a little girl sitting on the grass—in her now mud covered dress and rain boots—staring at the ground. Over the next few weeks, every time I passed that yard the little girl was just sitting there in the same spot playing with her dolls, and every now and then she would glance over at a patch of dirt that was not even a foot away from her. Day by day, she sat there, and day by day I rode by. Until one day, my curiosity overtook me. So as I passed her house I parked my bike on the side of the road and walked up to her. As I got closer I noticed something sticking out of the ground. It was a small green stem, not even an inch tall. When I got close to the little girl, she looked up with wonder and curiosity glittering in her eyes. I slowly sat down next to her as she watched my every move. Once I sat down completely, she went back to playing with her dolls, looking back and forth between the little green stem and me. This went on for days. I would just sit and give her company, and each day that little green stem got bigger and bigger until towards the middle of spring when I noticed a bud began to appear on it. And one day, when I rode my bike down that street and by the house where the little girl had sat, she was not there, but the flower had bloomed right in front of my eyes.
