Violet Sonata

Alyssa Harris, Grade 10

The music wafted through the door and into the halls, drawing him nearer. His heart lit red as a voice, clear and fine as crystal, began to sing with the notes. Striding along the corner, he strained to see through the window of the room, searching for the source of the music. The sound was muffled. He wanted, needed to hear it better. To get closer. He pushed against the door, squeaking in surprise as it gave and he tumbled face first into the room of melodies.

Startled by the crashing sound, the girl abruptly stopped, much to his dismay. “S-sorry!” he stammered, rushing to his feet. “I didn’t mean—I should go.”

“Wait!” the girl called as he turned his back, a blue glow flaring around her heart. She scraped back the piano bench and rushed to him, pointing from his chest to hers in disbelief.

“Our heart lights,” she mumbled, “They’re shining.”

Crimson flushed both of their faces as the lights glowed even brighter, the connection growing stronger with the decreased amount of distance. She grabbed his hand on impulse, pulling him towards the piano.

“Sing with me.”

“Wha—no. I mean, I can’t.”

“You can, and you will,” she ordered defiantly.

He gulped as she pulled him down onto the bench, finding himself sitting not a breath away from her. She leaned forward, placing her delicate, graceful fingers on the polished ivories, and restarted her song. The boy could only stare in awe as she opened her pink mouth to the melody. Her eyes fluttered closed, but after a moment, one squinted open. “This is where you come in.”

“What do I say?”

“Just sing.”

He opened his mouth, but only a frog’s croak would sound. Clearing his throat, he tried again. Her fingers ended their pause on the keys and she joined him in perfect harmony. The piano faded into the background, despite her continued playing, as the two met each other’s eyes. Sapphire to amber brown. Blue to red.

Their hearts, the piano, the room—they all shined violet.
