Amidst all of the pedophile scandals that rocked
his reign, in 2013, Ratzinger, Pope Benedict XVI,
became the first pope to resign since 1415, citing
frail health. He was 86.
An apologist for this pope, John L. Allen, the
author of two books on Benedict, said “the Pope
deserved credit for taking the issue of pedophile
priests seriously,” even if the letter had not been
tough enough to satisfy victims or critics of the
Catholic hierarchy. “For people who know the history of the Church's painfully slow and inadequate
response to this crisis, this pope is one of the good
guys,” he said.
“He was the first pope to meet with the victims
of sex abuse, and he has really broken the wall
of silence around the whole issue. By historical
standards, he is a pioneer, and this letter is another
chapter reflecting that.” h

journalists at the Boston globe, Spotlight, has been
made into a movie. Spotlight uncovered a trail of
pedophile abuses of children from 2001 to 2010 in
the Boston area, the consequences of which had
more far-reaching effects than they ever realized.
