retrievers doing cute things , the consumer will be programmed to feel fear when seeing that breed of dog . However , if the consumer was never exposed to that information , he never would have felt that fear . In other words , news agencies can create fears where none existed before . Now imagine that power directed against Jews and Muslims .
Adolf Hitler had manipulated the German people into fearing a mortal enemy that threatened their race , the Jewish population itself . A rant from page 49 of Hitler ’ s personal book “ Mein Kampf ” truly shows the aggressive fear-mongering in Nazi rhetoric .
“ The black haired Jewish youth lies in wait for hours on end , satanically glaring at and spying on the unsuspecting girl whom he plans to seduce , adulterating her blood and removing her from the bosom of her own people . The Jew uses every possible means to undermine the racial foundations of a subjugated people . In his systematic effort to ruin girls and women he strives to break down the last barriers of discrimination between him and other people . The Jews were responsible for bringing Negroes into the Rhineland , with the ultimate idea of bastardizing the white race which they hate and thus lowering its cultural and political level so that the Jew might dominate . For as long as a people remain really pure and are conscious of the treasure of their blood , they can never be overcome by the Jew . Never in this world can the Jew become the master of any people except a bastardized people .”
In this passage of Mein Kampf , the sociopathic , soon-to-be-dictator uses the fear appeal flawlessly . Note that a majority of the quote is citing the dangers of the Jews and how they threaten German bloodlines . Also take note of how he offers the anxiety relieving solution , “ For as long as a people remain really pure and are conscious of the treasure of their blood , they can never be overcome by the Jew .” In other words , if Germans refused to interracially marry or reproduce , the Jews would not be able to grow in number and dominate society .
A single anti-Semitic statement such as that one would not gain much standing if only said once . However , it is text book history that the Nazis spoke ill of the Jews quite frequently , if not constantly . The Jews became scapegoats for everything wrong with Germany . The Nazis fervently believed that the economy , the growing minority populations , divorce rates , politics , and even the start of the second world war , was influenced by a Jewish conspiracy . It was this kind of rhetoric that justified the mass murder of over 6 million Jews in Europe .
In a speech broadcasted by CSPAN , then-presidential-candidate Donald Trump advocates the complete ban of all Muslim immigration into the country . The audience is told that a majority of Muslims are hell-bent on killing Americans , and that they want to implement a gross interpretation of “ Sharia Law ” in the country . In one part of the speech he says “ We have no choice . According to PEW research , there is great hatred towards Americans in large segments of the Muslim population .” He goes on to paint a picture of Islam that is ludicrous and imaginary , then inflates existing fears in the public and offers a solution that resolves those fears .
There is a clear similarity between Trump ' s speech and the way the fear appeal was used in German government propaganda . Keep in mind that early Nazi policies called for bans on Jewish immigration and forced deportation long before the creation of death camps because of the “ threat ” Jews posed to Germany .
These methods of propaganda , although simple , can create very dangerous reactions in people . Using simple slogans , the Nazi party managed to start a holocaust , killing millions . Many Americans do not realize what kind of impact fear-mongering has in the media . The exploitation of fear of terrorism was the basis for approval of the invasion of Iraq ,
