Paris Haywood is a Marketing major and a
sophomore at the University of Northern Iowa. In late
2018, she was elected the President of the Black
Student Union -- BSU. She is driven to become
a leader and learn more about her Black culture.
A group of upperclassmen advised, “Since you’re
coming to a PWI -- Predominantly White Institution
-- you should join BSU. It is where you’ll find people
that have a common interest.”
“Initially, my interest was piqued when I learned I
could be a part of the team that created the Black
History Month activities. I desired to grow my skills in
coordinating events and I love meeting new people.
So here I am,” Paris said. The general body meets
every two weeks. Black students come from all over
the country and world to attend UNI. We participate
in icebreakers, play games, and eat together to get
to know each other. Paris adds, “We try to make our
meetings welcoming and inviting. It’s a great stress
reliever after classes.”
