The Skilled Communicator Vol. 1 | Page 9

Public speaking may be challenging, but the skill that can be learned will take many to a career path of their choice.

nstructor Shawndee Fluker, another professor from Southeastern Louisiana University, teaches public speaking and is conducting an apprehensive speech course of 15 students to ease student who have social anxiety into publicly speaking in front of a classroom setting. The instructor grants, “It’s going to make them feel much better knowing that everybody has the same issue. Everybody has anxiety, whether you just have accommodations for it or you just have a therapist. Everybody has some anxiety. I think that in itself, is going to let people rest easily instead of looking at others saying they are flawless or that speech from my friend was perfect.”

Instructor Shawndee is innovating the public speaking course to cater to students who have anxiety of speaking in public and explains that the methods she teaches can be used beyond the college setting. Ms. Boudreaux will be the first instructor teaching this course and it will open in the spring.
