Academy – Land Rover U14’s, U16’ and U18’s
A key feeder into the senior set up and indeed the basis for future National teams is our Academy.
This has only been in existence for just over six years, but the effort that has gone into this section is already bearing fruit – Aidan Beazley, Nathan Ponce, Michael Posso, Roger Cabral, Ziad El-Yabani, Moussa Tuznani, Jack Knights and Rowan Humphries have all been training with the National and Development Squads.
We are proud that they are all products of the Academy, having played all their rugby in and for Gibraltar, with some of them continuing their rugby development in UK, where a number of them are studying. At the time that this article had to be submitted for printing, the final selection for this match had not been made, so look out for some of the above names on today’s match squad. We are sure that there will be many more future players following in their footsteps.
The Academy is currently run by six coaches who coordinate U14, U16 and U18 squads totalling close on 70 youngsters. The three-year plan (currently finishing its second year) will aim to deliver a U23 squad, with each of the squads run by two coaches and a team manager. A big step has been taken in this direction with the large number of youngsters being involved in the Development Squad. The Academy has also coordinated the careful induction of youngsters into the local Super IV’s teams, where their development is closely monitored.
While we are confident in our abilities to bring this project to fruition, this is precisely the area where FIRA membership will be invaluable. Access to technical expertise and assistance will prove a massive boost to the hard work already being done and will enable more young people to discover and enjoy our wonderful sport.
