Mike began working for the RFU in 2008. During this time he coached the Lancashire U15’s and U16’s and then coached at the Sale Sharks School of rugby until his move to Gibraltar in 2011.

In 2010 Mike attained his Coach Educator Licence.

Since arriving in Gibraltar Mike has organised an IRB Level 1 course which has resulted in an increased number of newly qualified coaches, together with an advanced coaching course for those that already hold the IRB 1 accreditation.

Mike has also arranged a Safeguarding children and young adult course which is being held in February by the GSLA, along with a first aid course being run in March by Heart Starters, and a Level 1 and Level 2 being delivered by the Penguins in May.

Mike also runs his own monthly coaching courses at the DTC.

High on Mike’s list of priorities was the “National Squad Give Back Scheme”, which aims to engage the Elite players of Gibraltar rugby with the community side.

National Players deliver coaching sessions to young players at club level, and in the schools together with events that are focused on participation within the sport.

An example of this working is Luke Payas coaching at Bayside after school club once a week.

Mike has been working with the National Squad, and this year’s development squad, in readiness for the Malta double header. The development squad is primarily a young squad. We hope to nurture their talent within the national Squad environment, giving them the best possible support to reach their potential.
