Our under 14’s represent the bridge between the increasingly successful Mini’s programme and the Academy.
The Mini’ s programme is starting to bear fruit in terms of developing a love for the game amongst a rising number of younger boys and girls with the Academy starting to receive the first wave of graduates from the Under 12’s group.
Recruitment from the Mini’s section is complemented by the great work being done in the Middle Schools and at Bayside by our coaches. Not all of our players are sourced from the Mini’s programme; we are seeking boys and girls of any ability to come down and try the game at our sessions.
Rugby is game for all ages, sexes, sizes, and abilities. Come down with your boots and our coaches will do the rest!
Testimony to this is that during our recent friendly with the Estrecho club in Guadiaro, 9 out of the 13 players for Gibraltar were playing their first organised game of Rugby.
The 2013/2014 season saw our under 14’s take part for the first time in the Andalucian league which proved a fantastic experience for them not just in terms of playing rugby but the fellowship and cultural exchange that travelling to play Rugby can bring. Some boys enjoyed the coach trips with their mates just as much as the Rugby!
The Academy has a long term plan in place to increase numbers in order that we can field a Gibraltar team at every age group. Unfortunately, this season 2014/15 has seen a number of last year’s Under 14’s team move up to the Under 16 age group without enough replacements coming through the system.
As such, we have spent the season attracting new players and developing their skills every Sunday and Tuesday in the Under 14 training group with a view to having further friendly matches at seasons end. A trip to Marbella is already planned as well as a further game with our neighbours Estrecho.
Our training group is growing and with a further intake from the Mini’s we expect to enter our Under 14’s next year once again into the Andalucian league.
