The Scrummary - June 2015 | Page 5

Welcome to the final edition of the Scrummary for the 2014/15 season and what a successful season the Gibraltar Rugby fraternity have had.

We have had thriving rugby action in the mini and junior sections with a number of touring fixtures taking place, not least against Portsmouth Grammar School who visited the Rock on Tour with their U12s. We also have a final fixture for our U20s against Pontypridd Boys school. This coupled with a number of fixtures internally for the

Super IV's U6s and U8s with the Scorpions Rugby Club being the dominant Mini Rugby team.

At the other end of the scale the National 1st XV and Vets team represented Gibraltar against the Royal Marines in celebrating their 350th Anniversary, duly hosted by HE the Governor, a former Royal Marine. The Vets warmed up what was an unusual wet day in September by taking to the field against some notable Premiership heroes of bygone days, a game played in the true spirit of rugby was witnessed to a crowd close to 800 people. The National Select team were determined not to allow the Royal Marines to have it there own way on their 350th birthday and ran out overall victors beating the British Military team and again showcasing the young and wonderful rugby talent we have on the Rock.

This followed a tough encounter against Malta, where a few costly errors exaggerated the end result, which ended up being a lot closer game.

The Vets have flown the flag high again, competing against a number of european teams, specifically a fun 3 way tournament against Dover and Clems Pirates from Durham and enjoyed a successful tour to San Sebastian as part of EGORF.

The continued success of the Super IV,s, the Buccaneers won the League again, which really came down to the consistency of the team that week in and week out turned up with a core group of players. But the highlight was in the Scorpions club gaining their first Silverware with a fantastic end of season run, which saw them lifting the Super IV's Cup, winning the final against last season Cup and League double winners the Strait Sharks.

Finally the GRFU would like to thank all of its supporters, administrators and sponsors who have worked hard as a team to deliver rugby on the Rock, especially throughout the Junior and Mini section. It is this Team effort that allows us to enjoy this great sport, and through the Scrummary we hope you can re live some of those memories, enjoy your read….
