father, Leslie Godinho, was a nationally acclaimed drummer
himself. Lester’s wealth of knowledge and musical experience
translates not only through the wide variety of music that
he plays, but also through his teachings and the students he
guides, most of whom have become accomplished drummers
themselves.
OZMA
“One foot in the liberty of jazz, the other in electro’s trance,
both hands covered in greasy rock.” This powerhouse of
a quintet compose what is often labeled as explosive jazz,
which is essentially adventurous, exciting jazz composition
nourished by practically every prominent music style. They
have released 6 albums to date and have performed over 300
shows on 4 different continents. Their latest album, Welcome
Home, is a joyous story-telling experience that highlights
memories from their five years of touring extensively across
the world.
Rhythm Shaw
A prodigy from Kolkata who needs no introduction and a
guitarist who’s arguably India’s best, Rhythm Shaw will be
performing at the JIC this year with his jazz band, Orjazzmic.
Rhythm performs with musical giants like A R Rahman
and Amit Trivedi as well as bass prodigy Mohini Dey, and
has recently toured across the UK and Germany, promoting
his music that happens to be the highest selling in CD sales
there. His versatility and proficiency seems boundless, with
influences ranging from Carnatic and Hindustani fusion to
Western classical, blues and rock.
Supergombo
This Afro-funk project is an exciting new offshoot of the
blend of cultures in France whose sounds are a cross between
Senegalese Mbalax, Congolese Soukouss and Funk. Their
music is somewhere between Fela Kuti and Hugh Masekela –
the music Maceo Parker would probably play if he knew the
Mediterranean better. It’s not "world music," though, since
all music is global these days. But Supergombo’s frenzied,
uncontrolled rhythms come from Montreuil as well as
Ouagadougou, with a stopover in la Guillotière – that lively
Lyon neighborhood where the cultural mix also stands for an
equal opportunity for all to dance.
WorldService Project
This British punk-jazz band has been aptly described as
“Downtown Abbey run by anarchists”, whose music has made
massive ripples in the cross-genre space. They’ve performed
in 18 countries and have released 4 studio albums including
the highly anticipated Serve in 2018. With live shows that are
both theatrical and energetic, their stage presence, force and
rhythm leave lasting impressions on every fan.
