2017 was quite an eventful year for the Indian Music Industry. In my opinion, we
had more music festivals, events, International artists performing in India, and
a few milestones too that call for a celebration! The reach of music events and
festivals has gone up and the turnout has become better.
Music Festivals
Almost all annual Music Festivals were really good this year. Notably, Sula
Fest, Ziro, SunBurn, Hornbill, Mahindra Blues, NH7 Weekender, Enchanted
Valley Carnival, and Magnetic Fields. Before you start saving those dates on the
calendar for 2018, plan your year to fit in a few days to be part of such festivals.
Make good memories with friends and family. Trust me, it will be worth it. (Says
the reluctant festival goer). Many music lovers had the opportunity to check off
items on their bucket list when some of the best international artists performed
here in India. Dream Theater, Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, The Chainsmokers,
KYGO, and Wiz Khalifa and more. We also had DJs like Alan Walker and David
Guetta enthralling audience.
Milestones:
Chennai's Margazhi season has always been the festive end of every year. The
Sabhas play a very important role in bringing together Carnatic musicians from
all over the country and abroad. This year is doubly special because Chennai
has gained international recognition by being included in the UNESCO Creative
Cities Network for its rich musical tradition.
Our very own AR Rahman completed 25 years in the Music Industry and also
and mesmerised the Indian audience through his Encore concert.
Musee Musical, a Music store in Chennai deserves a special mention for its
175th Anniversary. Yes, they have been in Music business for 175 years and this
store is truly a landmark for Music on the Indian map.
Not to forget the GST implementation at the beginning of July on all Music
instruments and books. A whopping 28% on instruments made pursuing music
a luxury. However, the tax rate on Music Instruments was eventually brought
down to 18%.
What more can I ask for? 2017 was great and impactful for The Score Magazine
with many new features. Looking forward to building a better musical
experience for you in 2018.
