From Kangana on one end of the spectrum to Rahul Gandhi on the other, nepotism and dynasty pervades every facet of the Indian life and has become an important talking point of this generation. Even businesses are not immune to this disease, with business owners shamelessly mixing work with family as helpless shareholders look on. Nepotism, unfortunately, has cheerleaders amongst us, who bravely defend those who inequitably and undeservedly take what belongs to all of us: equal opportunity. However, this is new India. Political dynasty lay powerless; upstart actors audaciously take on smug self-entitled inheritors of Bollywood and board of directors bravely challenge the industry veterans of yesteryear. But, where talent truly matters: in the realm of sports and music, nepotism has never had a stranglehold. But, while the rest of India shuns the evil of nepotism, the music industry watches helplessly as celebrities with half a tune and a few lines of drunken lyrics make talent irrelevant through the use of technology. It makes me wonder where the future leads from here, and future generations will surely judge us for deprecating our culture with indigestible muck. And while I am truly depressed at the state of affairs over the last few years, I live in hope: If India could move on and forget the political Lalu, then surely we can move past the music Lalu's that dominate today's radio waves.
