Small Business Committee we get to see the result, which often
isn’t good at all.
An increasingly urgent area in which all three are overlapping is the issue of cybersecurity. There’s a clear foreign affairs
component when we think about how many of these attacks
come from foreign entities seeking to do harm. From the
Judiciary Committee, we look at the ways we can and should
protect ourselves with increasingly complex technology. And at
the Small Business Committee, once again, we hear from real
folks who are affected in one way or another either by vulnerabilities in our cyber infrastructure or by federal mandates that
often add to compliance burdens.
If anything has become clear to me over the past 20 years
in Congress and over the past nearly two years as chairman of
the Small Business Committee, it’s that small businesses are
impacted by or have an impact on more policy areas than most
people realize.
Q
In what ways are you seeking feedback from small
businesses in Ohio and then using that information
in Washington, D.C.?
A
One of the things we get to do at the Small Business
Committee is hear from regular folks in our committee
hearings. We love it when small-business owners or employees
or entrepreneurs from my hometown of Cincinnati or from
any of our members’ districts make the trip to Washington to

tell members of Congress from both sides of the aisle what is
and isn’t working for small businesses. That’s one way we get
feedback.
I’ve found that most members of Congress make it a
priority to drop in and visit small businesses in our districts
on a regular basis. A lot of people don’t realize that the
Congressional schedule is designed in a way that allows
congressmen and congresswomen to meet with folks back in
their districts about two days out of each week in addition to
those weeks that are set aside for district work. Consistency
is key to most relationships, and staying in touch locally
really helps. I think any small-business owner should reach
out to their member of Congress and introduce themselves if
they haven’t already. S
