Did you hear about Barbie?
Today she comes in different shapes and sizes, just like REAL people!
It wasn?t always that way.
What began this switch from the media imagery of ?perfection? to acknowledging real women?s
variety of shapes, colors, and sizes?
From German Working Girl t o America?s Sweet heart
Prior to the introduction of the Barbie Doll, American dolls were
babies and toddlers, not adults. Designed for preschool girls, these
dolls allowed them to model the adult behavior of their mothers in
the roles of nurturing parent.
During a trip to Germany Ruth Handler, one of the founders of
Mattel, discovered a popular German doll that loosely resembled an
adult woman called Bild Lilli. This doll was based on a German
cartoon character named ?Lilli?, a post-war, sassy and ambitious
working girl.
Originally not intended for children, the Bild Lilli doll soon became
very popular among young European girls. Cashing in on Bild Lili?s
popularity, the manufacturer produced dollhouses, furniture, and
other accessories.
