The new season for the Club got off to a much
more organised and relaxed start than last year.
Following the closure of the Galleon Ice Rink
for repairs in 2013 and a late notice that the
Galleon ice rink would not open in time for
the new season all the dates and times for the
games had to be re-scheduled.
going back to 1836. Before 1842 the rules
were agreed between the teams on the day,
the number of players in a team, the size of
the curling stones, the length of the curling
rinks, in those days Stewarton Heather played
outdoors at Fullwood.
There were two Stewarton clubs, the Heather
club and Stewarton Friendly who played at
Clerkland.
It is thanks to the management and staff at
Greenacres Ice Rink that we managed to
rearrange most of our competitions and play
them through to completion.
This year it was decided that we would
return to Greenacres, the games are just as
competitive but, we have found that the more
sociable side to curling has returned. This can
be seen by the number of members who stay
after the game to enjoy a cup of tea, or, if they
are not driving something slightly stronger. It
has also become popular to have a meal after
an inter-club game rather than just sandwiches
as was in the past.
Just because we have moved venue it does not
mean our level of curling has slipped in fact
just the opposite.
Accolades for our members just keep pouring
in, the season started with Stewarton Heather
winning the Ayrshire Province Knockout; they
will now go forward to represent Ayrshire at
the National Province Finals in February 2015.
This is only the start of the season so hopefully
they will be collecting more trophies as the
year progresses.
Player of the year David Mundell and President Douglas Reid
the competition, Stewarton Heather were
winners for 2013. The Reid brothers Tom,
Hugh, Robert and Colin being one team and
the other was David Mundell , David Reid,
Douglas Reid and John Craig.
David Reid was a member of the team who
won the Scottish Mens Championship, along
with Ewan MacDonald, Duncan Fernie and
Euan Byers they went on to represent Scotland
at the World Championships in Beijing, )
