swat and stewarton pupils
bring back the bluebells
On Sunday 26th October 2014,
members of SWAT were joined
by pupils from the Interact Club
at Stewarton Academy, along
with their teacher Mr Graeme
Johnston, and Mr Ian Shaw from
Stewarton District Rotary Club, to
plant bluebell and daffodil bulbs.
Many Stewarton residents have
bemoaned the fact that a lot of the
bluebell woods in the area have
been destroyed by house building,
so SWAT decided it might be a
good idea to try to create some
new bluebell areas in and around
Lainshaw Estate, where bluebells
used to abound. At the same time
as planting the bluebells, we took
advantage of our helpers, to plant
some more daffodil bulbs in places
where they can be enjoyed by those
who use the paths and benches.
Two ladies who regularly use
one of our benches will be
particularly pleased!
Pupils
from
Lainshaw
Primary were also involved
on Sunday 9th November,
and their help was much
appreciated.
The cost of these plantings
was met by a grant from
Scottish Natural Heritage,
as part of the Action
Earth 2014 Project, and
SWAT is very grateful
to them for being so
generous.
Bluebell
bulbs are surprisingly
expensive!
As always, we are looking to recruit more members, so please, if
you are reading this and can give us a little of your time, contact
SWAT either by emailing [email protected]
or contacting us on our Stewarton Woodlands Action Trust
Facebook page, where you’ll find regular updates..
