stewarton community
allotment society open day
There are many fantastic summer events in the local
area, and this year the Stewarton Community Allotment
Society Open Day must rate fairly highly on an already
very distinguished list. The sun came out and the
community visited in their droves, giving the allotment
members ample opportunity to showcase their produce
and the site itself. They certainly didn’t disappoint!
On show were courgettes resembling tomahawk missiles, potatoes of
such girth they could sink a small flotilla of battleships, and pristine
allotments in such good health even the Beechgrove crew would be
blushing with pride. But in true innuendo style, it is not all about the
size is it now… And the allotmenteers didn’t disappoint in the quality
or variety either. Visitors were impressed by the tidy ranks of onions,
colourful clusters of strawberries, exotic bursts of pak choi, towering
sweetcorn and the ubiquitous bean, to name but a few.
The day catered for everyone. There were games for the children,
horseshoe hoopla arranged by Stewarton Woodlands Action Trust, and
the local firemen even brought their engine down for the kids to play
on. For the less young there was a raffle and a tombola with all sorts
of prizes kindly volunteered by members and other friends – the ales
and the whisky disappeared very quickly indeed! The home baking and
vegetable stalls were very popular, and the sunshine made the wanders
of the site even more pleasant than normal.
There were awards as well, and this year we were fortunate to have
Cathy Jamieson our local MP as judge. The winners this year were:
Longest Courgette - Alistair Curran
Largest Potato -
