Congratulations to all the Commonwealth baton bearers in Stewarton, and for the part they played in making Gala day extra-special! We were particularly delighted to welcome long-term supporter of the Bonnet Guild, Betty Bennett, as she carried the baton to Gala day park in the grounds of Lainshaw Primary School. Friday night was the ever popular fancy dress competition where anything goes! With over 10 categories, our judges has a hard task on their hands, awarding first second and third prize in each category. Some fabulous individual and group entries, followed by the traditional parade to Avenue Square for an Pioli’s ice-cream and chocolate treat. Thanks to judges Mr & Mrs Blackwood, Mr & Mrs Matthew Torrance and Sid Wilkie and Wendy Stewart. Thank-you also to all the shops that took part in the shop window competition. A very high standard was shown by all, but this year’s worthy winners were Martin McColls, followed by Bloomingwales and Wednesday night’s pool competition was won by Tommy Ewing with Rab Creach runner up and the following evening the Bonnet Guild Bowling Pairs tournament was played. In an exciting, closely fought final, Jim Wilson and Shane Morland narrowly beat Bruce McNaughton and Colin Drummond by 13 shots to 11. Well done gents! Thankfully the sun was splitting the skies on Gala Day, bringing out what surely was a record crowd to watch the crowning of this year’s Corsehill Queen Jennifer Pryce, the float parade and the arrival of the Commonwealth Baton. Congratulations to Jennifer and her Court - 1st Maid Amy McDade, 2nd Maid Miriam Gill, accompanying Maids: Iona Watt, Robyn Morton, Niamh Campbell and Emma Moore. First Courtier Billy Brazier, 2nd Courtier Angus Busby, Herald Joe Taylor, Sword Bearer Jared Muir, Crown Bearer Douglas Bloomfield, Sceptre Bearer Daniel Glasswell, Pages: James Montgomery and Murray Hewitt and Queen’s Highlander Ewan Williamson. They all carried out their duties extremely well and were a real credit to their families, school and Stewarton community.
