Stewarton Drama Group have been placed SECOND
OVERALL in Scotland at the conclusion of the
National Final of the Scottish Community Drama
Association’s One-Act Play Festival with their multi-award
winning production of ‘Waste
Management’, written and directed
by Ayrshire playwright and SDG
member, Nancy McPherson.
The Stewarton team’s journey to the
National Final began back in February,
when they were placed First in Ayrshire
at the first round of the competition
in Kilmarnock’s Palace Theatre where
the team also lifted the trophy for the
Best Stage Lighting. Following on from
their win in Ayrshire, the team’s success
continued when, for only the 5th time in
their 40-year history, they were placed first
from an original entry of 46 plays across
the whole of West of Scotland, at the
Western Divisional Final in March in the
Fullarton Theatre in Castle Douglas. The
team also lifted the trophy for Best Stage
Presentation.
At the National Final in East Kilbride
at the end of April, the Stewarton team
competed as one of the top 8 plays in
Scotland alongside clubs from as far afield
as Orkney, Aberfeldy and Plockton at the
conclusion of this annual competition which began with an original
entry of 125 plays.
That was only the 10th occasion in their 40-year history that Stewarton
Drama Group had made it to the prestigious National Final of
the competition, and their final placing as Second Place overall in
Scotland puts their production of ‘Waste
Management’ into the SDG history books
as one of the top 3 highest placed plays the
group have ever performed – picking up a
total of seven trophies in all along the way !

Not only that, but the Group’s production
of the smash hit play ‘Calendar Girls’,
written by Tim Firth, and directed by
Nancy McPherson, which played to sell
out crowds in the Stewarton Area Centre
back in October 2013, not only won the
2013 Ayrshire Full Length Play Festival,
but the production was also awarded the
trophy for the Winning Full Length Play
in the whole of the West of Scotland,
taking the group’s trophy haul to nine
pieces of silverware this year ! ‘Calendar
Girls’ was a very special production indeed
for the group, performed in celebration
of SDG’s 40th Birthday. The whole
community supported the production
so generously, raising a total of £1,500
through raffles and collection buckets,
which was all donated by SDG to
Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research in
Scotland.
