Recently I have had a number of people contact
me following bogus callers claiming to be from
well-known brands such as Microsoft, TalkTalk,
BT among others. They all claim to have detected
an issue with your computer and need to access it
remotely to resolve the issue. If you receive a call
like this you should hang up the phone.
Unfortunately, a number of
people are convinced that the
caller is genuine and follow
their instructions to allow
them to connect to the PC or
Laptop. They will then show
you a number of items on the
screen and advise you that this
is causing the issue. What they
are most likely showing you
are normal log files that your
computer will automatically
generate.
They will then tell you they can
fix the issue for a small fee of
anywhere from £2.99 to £3.99
or more.
Since it does not sound like a
lot of money and you are now
worried that your computer
has a major issue, you happily
hand over your debit card
details, only for a figure of
around £299.00 - £399.00 being
taken off your account. They
will then download some free
programs that contain lots of
security issues in themselves
and spend another hour or so
running scans, when in fact in
the background they could be
encrypting your information
or setting up a password that
locks out your computer after
it restarts. At this stage they
will advise it will cost many
hundreds of pounds for them
to supply the password to allow
you to access your computer.
If this happens you should turn
off your computer and contact
your bank to cancel the card
used in the transaction. In most
cases the banks will be able
to stop the payment clearing
and refund you the money.
You should then contact an IT
professional to arrange for a
system clean-up to be carried
out to ascertain the damage
caused to your computer.
