Top Tips for Filling (Killing) Your Free Weekend
by Dan Vollmer, Associate Broker, ReMax 1st Olympic
Recently I did a short
video with my Top 3 Tips
for One-Hour Weekend
Projects (find my Facebook
Business page: Dan Vollmer REALTOR).
Here are those ideas, and a few more, if you
happen to have a free Saturday on your hands
with nothing better to do!
Paint your front door: your front door
probably takes a beating in the direct sun-
light, so it needs some love from time to time.
We often recommend to our clients that they
go with a Rustoleum High Gloss black. Just
get a quart and if your painting over some-
thing bold (like a red or blue) you might need
to give it 2 coats.
Replace your mailbox: after taking the
abuse of rain, sleet, snow, direct sunlight and
maybe a few hits from those neighborhood
hooligans, its time to give your mailbox an
upgrade. Run by your favorite hardware store
and grab a new one. You’ll need a screw-
driver, and maybe a paintbrush (if you have
wooden posts). The voila - good as new!
Clean light fixtures: admittedly, not the
most fun way to spend an hour. But… go
through your house, replace all your burned
our light bulbs, and then clean and dust all
your fixtures. You’d be amazed at the dif-
ference it makes and how much nicer your
home will look!
Extra Credit:
Clean all your windows, inside and out:
okay, so maybe you wait until after pollen
season to do this one. But take a few hours
and get every window in your house clean
and streak free (use newspaper to clean
instead of paper towels). Trust me, your home
will sparkle and shine.
Clean your gutters: this one you probably
should have done in the late fall, but if you’re
like me and forgot, now’s the time. Get them
clean and clear of debris before the rainy sea-
sons hits. And don’t risk it if your gutters are
too high or hard to reach - call a professional.
Trim your bushes and shrubs: take a few
minutes before you do and research the best
time of year to clip back your plantings. But
if you go ahead and get this one done now
- and rake out the debris from your landscap-
ing - then you can move on to…
Mulch: I know, I know… you plan to get to
this. But before you know it, it’ll be July. And
you’ll want to take a free Saturday to go to
the lake, or somewhere else out of town. And
soon the summer will be over. If you don’t
do it now, you might not get to it at all. And
besides, there’s nothing quite like spreading a
half-ton of mulch to give you a great workout.
What are you planning to do this spring?
How else do you make good use of a perfectly
nice Saturday afternoon? I’d love to hear - or
see - the projects you’re undertaking! Shoot
me a photo through my business page, or
email me at [email protected].
