Quality, Safe, Effective Healthcare Baylor Students Partner with Providence to Develop Research Projects by Katherine Maler, Cardiology Department Clinic Coordinator In 2012, the M. Brian Aynesworth Research Department began collaborating with Baylor University through their Research Associates Program. At the request of Dr. Richard Sanker, Director of the Office of Pre-Health Studies, 3 undergraduate students entered a program at Providence Health Center developed by Dr. Samina Ali to give selected students the opportunity to obtain experience in medical research. Baylor research students presented research project posters at Providence's first annual Student Research Day. Students apply and are chosen by Baylor University staff for the internship position and receive college credit for one year participation. Through working with Principal Investigators and research staff, selected students learn how to develop a research project, write a protocol, navigate the IRB submission process, and collect and analyze data. Valuable clinical experience is gained through collaboration with various hospital departments and personnel. Students are required to prepare a poster board presentation on their projects. These posters were presented by the students at the Family Health Center Residency Research Forum on April 15, and at Baylor University Annual Research Day in March 2014. On April 25, the first Student Research Day at Providence was held. The current Baylor Research students presented posters on the following topics: Radiation Exposure During Vertebroplasty; a Breast Cancer Patient Satisfaction Study; and Improving CHF Care through Factors Associated with 30 Day Readmission Rates. Providence associates were given the opportunity to view the student’s posters and interact with the students on their projects. Dr. Ali and research coordinator Julia Armstrong would like to thank those who attended Providence Research Day and especially Dr. Adam Borowski and Dr. William Turney for their collaboration and mentorship of the research students on these projects. Greeted at the Door by Service of the Poor, Reverence, Integrity, Wisdom, Creativity and Dedication When you walk through the doors of 4 East, you are greeted by both friendly staff, and beautifully crafted images of our Core Values. Nurse Manager Tammy Tillery describes the story behind them: Tammy Tillery, RN, 4 East nurse manager, stands by our Mission and Core Values. I made those a couple of years ago by printing our Core Values on pretty paper and framing them. They first hung in the Education Department and when I transitioned to 4 East, Ellen asked me to hang them on our unit. Of course, it was my pleasure to do so. I am a firm believer in keeping your goals before you and it is my hope that by posting our Mission and Core Values where you enter and exit our floor, every staff member will remember and reflect upon why we are here and what we are called to do. Deuteronomy 6:5-8 tells us: “And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today." Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. 6 • The Pulse of Providence
