John Sheehy Recognized by Providence Foundation
Approximately 140 close friends and family turned out to honor John F.
Sheehy, Jr. at a Providence Foundation dinner event on Saturday evening,
April 11. John was honored for being a great dad, grandfather and
great-grandfather, for his faithful service in our community, and for his
leadership in establishing and growing the Providence Foundation.
John served as one of the first lay members of the Providence
Healthcare Network board of directors. He served as a co-chairman
of the 1987 capital campaign to raise funds for the “new” Providence
Health Center. John helped to create the Providence Founders Society, Many gathered to honor John Sheehy, a founding
father of Providence Foundation.
which has grown to approximately 150 members. These generous benefactors
donate at least $1,000 a year to the Providence Foundation. He has been the Founders Society’s only chairman.
A story goes that in the late 1980s, hospitals were impacted by a downturn in the U.S. economy. As a result,
Providence came under a capital spending moratorium, which restricted the purchase of important, state-of-the-art
medical equipment and other needs. John’s friend Terry Stevens stated, “Wouldn’t it have been nice if someone
had created a foundation for the hospital 20 years ago so that we wouldn’t have to worry about the ebb and flow
of the economy?” John’s insightful reply was, “Terry, let’s be sure that people don’t say that about us 20 years from
now!” As a result, John became a “founding father” of the Providence Foundation (which celebrated its 20th
anniversary last year). John has served on the Providence Foundation’s board of trustees as its vice chairman and its
only grant review committee chairman. He is a generous benefactor to the Providence Foundation as well.
John agreed to allow the Providence Foundation to host this dinner in his honor, only if it would be a
fundraising event benefitting Providence. And an event it was! It was a sellout that grossed $16,800! Dave
Guyer, Executive Director of the Providence Foundation stated, “Speaking for the Providence family now and
generations past, John Sheehy’s faithful leadership, servant hood, and generosity have been an enormous
blessing to Providence and more importantly, to Central Texas patients who seek us for quality and
compassionate healthcare. God bless John Sheehy!”
