Local Breast Cancer Screening a Success! by Jennifer Furrer, Breast Health Center Coordinator On October 5, 2013 outside Texas Oncology – Horizon Circle, ladies were camped out in their lawn chairs waiting for the doors to open as volunteers from Providence Hospital and Texas Oncology turned on the coffee pot and welcomed local physician volunteers to their posts. DJ’s DeWayne and Tamme from our local radio station KBGO even came by to interview physicians and tell the community about the event. 110 women received a clinical breast exam by some of our favorite family practice doctors, surgeons and oncologists. 13 women were referred back to their primary care physician for clinical evaluation and diagnostic imaging of a palpable finding. 67 women were encouraged to make an appointment for their annual screening mammogram. 37 women were given information about financial assistance for these necessary exams. To date 11 appointments have been made and at least 5 but possibly as many as 15 will be receiving free breast imaging through our Providence Pink Partner Fund. 10 women completed a risk assessment and 7 of those were candidates for Texas Oncology’s Genetic Risk Evaluation and Assessment Program. Young participants were educated about the importance of early detection through breast self-exam and annual mammograms beginning at age 40. A big thank you to all of our volunteers and  physician volunteers for their time, to local donors for food and goody bags, and to our participants for all making this a successful event!
