THE P RTAL September 2013 Page 19 From my 20s onwards I was introduced to “bells and smells” in Aberdeen before moving down to South London and moving from Series whatever via the ASB to the Roman Missal, but as Aunty says we tried our best to celebrate the liturgy “with care and accuracy”. Also, since the 1970s I’ve used the Divine Ordinariate Pilgrimage led by Mgr Keith Newton 11th - 18th November 2014 Eight Days - £1399 - from London Heathrow Full Details, Itinerary and Booking Form from www.portalmag.co.uk Office for daily prayer and although I’ve bought a copy of the Customary I haven’t really been able to come to grips with it. I’ve also got a copy of Divine Worship which I think Mgr Burnham may have drawn on and again, although I recognise the Prayer Book material, it is unfamiliar and not really part of my patrimony. I suspect this is true for others. A fourth aspect of Anglican Patrimony is, I believe, its great musical tradition, not just Stanford or Darke or Byrd or Tallis, but also the many great hymns in the English Hymnal with their rousing tunes and sound teaching and the avoidance of trivial verses with tum-te-tum tunes, There is also of course the tradition of the congregation actually joining in singing the hymns and settings. So in my own mind I have the ideas of pastoral outreach, good liturgy, a background of liturgical resources and a great musical tradition. I’ve just ordered Dr Nichols’ book and I’m certainly looking forward to “reading it carefully”. With thanks for all your work in producing The Portal.
