A Survey of the Houses and Churches etc of
St John of Jerusalem including those earlier
belonging to the Knights Templar
“The author demonstrates in the most vivid way possible just how
remarkably rich and widespread the Knights Hospitaller were in
pre-Reformation England, to an extent of which even few scholars
are aware. His photographs supplement his text to maximum effect,
enabling us to realise just how important a part this extraordinary
religious order of monk-knights played in the country’s life. One can
see why, like the great mitred Benedictine abbots, the Grand Prior of
St John (who occupied their main house in this country, the imposing
Grand Priory at Clerkenwell) sat in the House of Lords where he
ranked first among the barons of the realm.”
