Geoffrey Kirk’s article in October reminded me
of an incident some years ago. I was a member of
General Synod for Southwark Diocese and a fellow
member who was lay chairman of his deanery asked
if I would oppose a motion on the Ordination of
Women, as no one in the deanery was opposed. I
duly attended and put my case. When the motion
was put to the floor one elderly lady said that I was
like the men who put girl babies outside to die. Such
