Church. My role was to care for him. I
then met Chris, and we started coming
to the Ordinariate Mass here. I am
getting familiar with Divine Worship.
It is very different. Chris says he went
into St Joseph an Anglican and came
out a Catholic!”
Michael Long is an artist. He mainly
paints landscapes. He taught art and
design. He is a founder member of the
Bristol Ordinariate Group. “Fr Paul
Spilsbury was a great supporter before
the Ordinariate took off.

“I was Church in Wales, but now a
Catholic. I could not carry on as an
Anglican. The game was up. I became
a Lay Catholic working as a Police
Officer, until the Ordinariate opened
up new doors for me.

“I know Fr Simon Ellis from his time
in Bristol. Indeed, I am doing a work
for his church in Birmingham. It is to
go in the gallery at the back.
“As to the Ordinariate? What a
wonderful link between the CofE and
the Catholic Church! Does it have a
long-term future? We shall see.”
It is a dream come true. I work as
a Hospital Chaplain now. It is the
highlight of my month – coming
here. They are good people, faithful
and true. I love working with Deacon
James.”
We very much enjoyed our time in
Weston-super-Mare. The church is
indeed beautiful, and the Mass was
equally beautifully celebrated. The
congregation may be small, but it is
devout and prayerful.
Should you find yourself in Weston
this summer on the second Sunday of
the month, do call in at 12 noon. You
will not be disappointed. However,
do check beforehand – they might be
on another “Away Day”!
Shelia Berry organises the food
brought by members for the bring and
Fr David Prichard
share lunch. We were told that she is
Queen of the kitchen. A widow now for ten years, her
Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham
husband was in the RAF. “We were CofE at All Saints Personal
Under the Patronage of Blessed John Henry Newman
Weston, and joined the Ordinariate with Fr Peter and
Ann. It all happened just after Michael (her husband)
died.”
Jim Thawley is a retired Assistant Principal of a Sixth
Form College in Leicester. He joined the Ordinariate
about a year after it began. He wanted to be Catholic
from the time he was at school.
“It took me a long time”, he told us. “I am a great
fan of Divine Worship; we use it all the time here. It
takes me back to CofE days before modern liturgy
took over.”
Fr David Prichard described himself as ‘a
geographical anomaly!’ “Upon the retirement of Fr
Peter, the Ordinary instructed me to step in here and
celebrate mass for the group. I am under obedience, so
I come!
“Divine Worship The Missal fits in well here at St
Joseph’s. It is a beautiful church. Catholic Victoriana
all preserved and not swept away. Our Rite, our Use,
complements it perfectly. Normally we start with the
Angelus, but as today is Palm Sunday, we began with
the procession.
