Ordinariate Clergy Retreat
Fr Jeff Woolnough, Group Pastor Southend Mission and Parish
Priest St Peter’s Eastwood in the Diocese of Brentwood, reports
T
wenty four gathered including our Ordinary, Monsignor Keith Newton and his wife, Gill at
Hothorpe Hall, Lutterworth. A very pleasant and relaxing location. The setting is ideal for walking, for
finding a place of solitude in the gardens for quiet contemplation.
To our good fortune, we were blessed with
spring like weather that further enhanced
the ability to enjoy and make good use of
our countryside location.
The Customary and Mass from Divine
Worship, provided our worship. We felt
at home in the rather splendid chapel,
bringing our own Altar set and image of
Our Lady of Walsingham.
Fr. Mark Elliot-Smith had composed a
new setting for Mass. It is simple in tone
yet beautiful. Dedicated to the memory
of dear Mgr Edwin Barnes, we sang the
setting like we’d known it for years - one
for our groups to learn, you’ll love it!
The content rich material presented to us from
our retreat conductor, Fr Alexander Lucie-Smith,
gave us all plenty to consider as regards our priestly
ministry as he took us through the Letter to the
Hebrews, beginning with the prophets, unpacking
the often complex theological material regarding
the sacrificial nature of the Eternal High Priest
himself, and a reminder of the oblation of Jesus
Christ in the Holy Mass-not a ‘meal’ but himself
once offered for the sins of the world. WALSINGHAM

Our accommodation was extremely comfortable
and the food, superb. Each evening we were given
the opportunity, before the greater silence in between
supper and retiring, for socialising and catching up
with colleagues serving in the many different and
various ways in which Ordinariate clergy ‘do’ over
England Wales and Scotland.
Our sincere thanks to Our Ordinary, Fr John Corbyn
and Fr Alexander Lucie-Smith, for making the retreat
so memorable; we hope that more clergy and their
wives might consider joining us next time?
