Jews and folly to the Greeks. We too, in our age, face
indifference from a multicultural and secular society
and, as Catholics, we are called upon to face our
present society in the same spirit as St Timothy and St
Titus, not in a spirit of timidity but in a spirit of power
and love and self-control. [2 Timothy 7]
Through the power of the Holy Spirit we have
received a wonderful start in 2019. Let us pray that we

D uring the
mass at the recent clergy plenary at St Aloysius, Somers Town
in London, Fr David Butler made his final vows as a hermit. All present were
hallowed by Fr David’s humility and dedication. Indeed the mass was in fact a requiem
mass for Mgr Edwin Barnes. As Mgr Keith Newton said in his homily, a strange mixture.
Fr Keith linked the two elements with the one word - commitment. Mgr Edwin was
certainly a committed man when it came to the Catholic Faith and it is beyond question
that Fr David is also a committed man in his vocation. Being called to be a hermit is no
easy life. He will pray for us, but we must all pray for him too.
