THE P RTAL July 2017 Page 18 Walsingham Whispers News from Norfolk whispered by Christine and Barry Barnes T he pilgrimage season started on 1st April with the Inter-Faith Pilgrimage and thereafter there are many groups who come on pilgrimage to England’s Nazareth. Many are Diocesan Pilgrimages but there are many individual parish pilgrimages. Sunday, 7th May saw the first of the Tamil Pilgrimages, regarded as the smaller of the two as only about 5000 attend! The main one is on Sunday 9th July, when they expect to cater for 12000! One of the most colourful is the Syro-Malabar with their Indian costumes and highly coloured and decorated umbrellas fringed with bells. Annunciation we had the Maundy Thursday Mass for the whole parish followed by the procession of the Blessed Sacrament to the Dowry House, where the Sisters’ chapel accommodated the Altar of Repose. The church is then taken over by the members of Student Cross who use it until we can take it back on Easter Day. So the congregation attend the Shrine for the Good Friday and Easter Vigil rites. Whilst writing this we await the annual Ordinariate If you are in Walsingham during July then the Pilgrimage, which this year is due to commence in the Abbey grounds before the procession to the Basilica. programme at the shrine is as follows: 1st Marist and Middle East Pilgrimages For those of us in the Walsingham group it is a chance 2nd Pilgrimage for the sick and Damon to meet and catch up with friends old and new from Community Pilgrimage the other groups who will be attending. 4th Union of Catholic Mothers 9th Second Tamil Pilgrimage At the end of July, marquees are erected opposite the 15th Diocese of Hallam Shrine to host the New Dawn pilgrimage (31st July to 16th Syro-Malabar 4th August) and Youth 2000 (24th to 28th August). 22nd Diocese of Brentwood Centenary Both of these events have people accommodated under 23rd Catholic Grandparents’ Association canvas and they have lectures, confessions, adoration 31st New Dawn Conference  and, of course, lots of fellowship and once again a great chance to mix. During the pilgrimage season we are unable to use the Slipper Chapel so the The Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham Mass is at 5pm, in the Annunciation Church in the village, but out of season when the clocks go back we use the Slipper Chapel at 3pm. THE ORDER OF MASS We usually have “stray” visitors who, no doubt, wonder what is going on. If any Ordinariate visitors find themselves at the Mass, please make yourself known to us as we would love to meet after Mass for tea and a chat. Walsingham Catholic Parish has three churches other than the Annunciation: St Henry Walpole, Burnham Market; St Peter, Blakeney; and Our Lady Star of the Sea, Wells.
