To the Editor

From The Revd Dr Bill East
I am happy to respond to Will Burton ’ s invitation to write a letter to The Portal . My letter concerns the column written by my old and dear friend , Geoffrey Kirk . Geoffrey dear , for goodness ’ sake lighten up ! Christmas is not dead . Yes , millions of our citizens are ignorant of the most basic facts of the Christmas story , but Christmas is still celebrated , and well and beautifully celebrated , by large numbers of the faithful . I wish , Geoffrey , you could have been in my church for Christmas : full of happy worshippers at midnight ; full and over-full , with people standing at the back , at the morning Mass . My brother priests all tell me the same story : that their churches were full and that the feast of our Lord ’ s nativity was well celebrated . Gaudeamus igitur !
