everyone matters
As the Catholic Church was
celebrating the Triduum, the BBC
broadcast “In the steps of Judas” with
what the Corporation describes as
“one of Britain’s best-loved vicars,
Kate Bottley”. The blurb promoting
the programme continued, “Kate
demonstrates why Judas matters and why
he is central to our understanding of the
Father Ivor Morris
Christian message today”.
It seems that everyone matters, except
Jesus. Geoffrey Kirk tackles this question
in his piece on page twenty four.
the popular “flying Jesus”
On a similar subject, Snapdragon is
puzzled by the absence of a crucifix
in some Catholic Churches. He is also
rather fazed by the popular “flying Jesus”
instead of cross or crucifix. You may
read this article on page five.
Father David Skeoch
saints for our age
Continuing her news of the Ladies
Ordinariate Group, or LOGS, Joanna
Bogle presents us with two saints for our
age. Saint John Paul II and Blessed John
Henry Newman.
something big is happening
David Chapman had a wonderful time
at Walsingham and tells us all about
it on page six asking us to think again
about going on pilgrimage to the “Holy
Apology
Sister Wendy Renate SOLR
Land of Walsingham”, where things
have changed, and are changing, and
changing for the better!
world Islam and its relations
with Christianity
The meat of this month’s edition is the
concluding part of our interview with
Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali. He has some
rather interesting things to say about the
state of the world in general and world
Islam and its relations with Christianity
in particular. We are most grateful to
Bishop Michael for granting us the
interview, and we wish him well in his
ministry for the future.
May they Rest in Peace
Sadly, we carry two obituaries this
month. One each for Father Ivor
Morris, Pastor of the Chelmsford
Group, and Father David Skeoch,
Pastor of the Ipswich Group. Both
were not only Ordinariate priests, but
friends of this journal. They will both
be greatly missed. We pray for the
repose of their souls.
As we were going to press, we heard
the sad news of the death of Sister
Wendy Renate SOLR, who died
following a heart attack on Wednesday
23rd March 2016. She has been a friend
to all at The Portal for many years. Next
month we will have an obituary for her,
but for now May she Rest in Peace.
On page twenty one of last month’s Portal, paragraph three should have read:
“Bishop-elect Lopes was on hand to greet hundreds from the local community as well as those from
around the globe gathered in this southern American centre of Catholic life under the pastoral care
of the effervescent Cardinal Joseph di Nardo, the first-ever cardinal appointed to the “Deep South” in
recognition of the massive and growing Catholic population in Texas and neighbouring states.
“Cardinal Daniel di Nardo has been a great and continuing friend to the Ordinariate. He convinced
the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston to gift the POCSP with the OLW church property. OLW had
begun life in the 1980s under the leadership of Fr. James Moore and Fr. James Ramsey as a Pastoral
Provision (Anglican Use) parish under the jurisdiction of the local archbishop. Later, Fr Bruce Noble
assisted in establishing the parish as it continued to grow.”
We apologise for our mistake and for an embarrassment caused. An expanded version of Fr Hodgins
